It seems like sci-fi and fantasy evoke more object and icon worship than any other genre. It might be a side effect of the kind of person who is attracted to sci-fi and fantasy (aspergers and nerdburgers), but I think it’s because these worlds only exist in our imaginations. Sci-fi asks the question, “what if this existed?” Replicas ask the question “are you sure it doesn’t?”

These objects are an exciting infringement of an imaginary world into the physical one. This alien head almost makes these monsters real. That’s scary, and thrilling. As a kid, I was constantly making Star Trek communicator pins and Green Lantern power rings out of cardboard and foamcore. I used them a bit as props for playing, but mostly they just had to exist so they could make galactic guardians and colossal spaceships exist more.

Anyway, that’s my explanation for why the apartment shown below exists, while googling “jane austen replica” comes up with one museum and one quilt.
