Babylon A.D. (2008)
Did you see that movie Children of Men, where Clive Owen had to save the only pregnant woman in a world where everyone stopped having babies? Well, imagine it starred Vin Diesel, instead of Clive Owen. Or, if you aren’t familiar with the works of Mr. Diesel (“the man they call penis” in the Fast and Furious quadrilogy) imagine a pre-politics Schwarzenegger.
Obviously, it missed a lot, but it hit home on a couple of fun points. American isolationism and the commercialization of religion, among other things. Enough to make it worth the watch, especially if you, unlike me, have a soft spot for messianic you-are-the-chosen-one religious elements in your sci-fi (e.g. The Matrix 2 & 3).
Gamer (2009)
If you liked Starship Troopers (which I did, very much) SEE THIS MOVIE!
In a world where you can play The Sims and Call of Duty with real people blah blah blah… all you need to know is there is porn EVERYWHERE, and people on the teevee curse like sailors. It’s your basic Paul Verhoeven (Robocop, Starship Troopers, Total Recall) style darkly funny dystopian future. Lame action sequences full of annoying digital-glitching-so-it’s-stylized aside, this movie kicked butt. It also featured a couple of cute Blade Runner nods. But then, doesn’t every sci-fi movie?
Also it was way better than its counterpart “Surrogates”, which came out at roughly the same time, and totally suckkkkkkked. I guess that makes this a triple feature, because that’s all anybody needs to say about Surrogates. ZING!
