Lower Dens on Daytrotter
Thanks to Sean and crew for, as ever, a good time, great recording, and very kind words. http://www.daytrotter.com/dt/lower-dens-concert/20031365-51539.html
Best Concerts of Ever
M. Ward: post war tour (2007 la sala rosa)
Magnolia Electric Co. (2006, I cried)
Flaming Lips opening for and backing up Beck (2002)
Counting Crows (with the Wallflowers, 1997)
Bright Eyes (with Arab Strap, 2003)
I’m omitting, forgetting, and neglecting some other great shows, I know. Some notable notes: Wax Mannequin in 2002 or 2003, opening for Run Chico Run. Flaming Lips at Osheaga 2006. My first (real) punk rock show (1999, Olympia WA). Propaghandi at Rock For Choice at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre in 2001. That first time seeing TV On the Radio was pretty good/effed up. Of Montreal, the first three times. Ladyhawk, every time.
Re: bowie timeline
I read someone, I think it might have been Lester Bangs, who claimed that a significant part of Bowie’s impact on music was through his producing. I’m not sure if this is complete, but I added the other artists he produced during this time period. The first three albums alone were huge. The whole thing is super impressive, especially because he also produced many of his own albums during this time.
In 1972 Freddie Murcury asked him to produce a Queen album, but he declined. I would pay good money to hear what that album would have sounded like.
The definition of irony
I’m pretty sure Leonard Cohen wishes he was Serge Gainsbourg, and Serge Gainsbourg wishes he was L. Cohen.
